The summer holidays are a great time for young footballers to recharge, but also a perfect chance to build ball skills and confidence. Even players like Harry Kane were told they weren’t good enough before going on to captain England. Every young player needs to put in the work to progress.
At Slade Green Knights, we know how much the kids love football. Here are a few simple ways to keep them active (and off screens!) this summer. You don’t need loads of space or equipment. A ball, some enthusiasm, and a few cones or jumpers will do the job.
1. 3-Cone Dribble Challenge
Set up 3 cones (or water bottles) in a line.
Dribble through them and back as fast as possible, using both feet.
-> Time yourself and try to beat your score.
2. Passing Against the Wall
Stand a few metres from a wall. Pass against it and control the rebound. Try:
20 right-foot passes
20 left-foot passes
Control with one foot, pass with the other
This is great for touch and accuracy... Try to beat your total each day by doing one more pass — 21, then 22, and so on.
3. Skill of the Day
Pick a new skill each day:
Stepovers
Drag backs
Cruyff turns
Toe touches
Watch a video together and practise the move 10 times. Aim to master it by the end of the week and try it out in training.
4. Target Practice
Set up a bucket, bin, or small goal.
Take turns trying to hit it from 3, 5, and 7 metres away.
You can reward points or come up with fun forfeits for the loser.
