Why Playing More Builds Better Teams

Why Playing More Builds Better Teams

How summer tournaments and friendlies help young players grow in confidence, skill and teamwork.

The best way for young footballers to grow and develop is simple: by playing. Back in the 90s and 2000s, most kids would train once a week on a Saturday and play matches on Sundays. These days, players training in academies are often doing two sessions a week, and making the most of every chance to play; at school, in the park with friends, even indoors with a soft ball (much to their parents’ concern!).

Once the league season wraps up in May, many clubs across South East London and Kent run summer tournaments. These are a brilliant opportunity for kids to play their own mini Euros or World Cup. These one-day events feature a mix of formats (5-a-side, 7-a-side, 9-a-side), with group stages and knockouts to decide a winner.

This summer, teams from across the Slade Green Knights age groups took part in several great competitions, including the AFC Lewisham Tournament, the Sutton AFC Tournament, and the Charlton Athletic Community Trust event. Many of our teams also arranged friendlies throughout June and July to support pre-season training and development.

Tournaments and pre-season games give grassroots teams so much. They’re a chance to experiment with new positions, build confidence, try different formats, and set fresh challenges. Just as importantly, they help players bond and feel part of the team before the new season kicks off.

We’re looking forward to sharing more updates and successes as we prepare for another exciting year of football at Slade Green Knights!
